January 29, 2024

Dr. Timothy Springer is looking for a highly motivated and resourceful candidate for a Research Assistant I position in his lab.  Research in the Springer lab uses exciting and innovative techniques including single-molecule FRET, cryoEM, X-ray crystallography, synthetic antibody discovery using yeast display platforms and quantitative biophysical and biochemical assays to study and unravel the mechanisms of protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions at the heart of cell signaling pathways that are relevant to immunology, hemostasis, and human pathologies like autoimmune diseases, cancer, and fibrosis.  This is a unique opportunity for recent graduates to learn new biology and techniques, hone their research skills, and sharpen their scientific mind before applying to graduate or medical school.

This Research Assistant I will be responsible for:

  • Conducting a research project under supervision of a senior lab member.  Performing a wide range of molecular biology, cell culture, and biochemistry techniques according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules. Recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy. Assisting in troubleshooting procedures if experimental results are unexpected or quality of specimens is poor.
  • Performing general lab tasks such as maintenance of common lab supplies and equipment and making solutions and media.
  • Performing the following techniques typically required for the laboratory/study: Maintains records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed. Maintains equipment, lab area and supplies in a neat professional manner.  Prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures.  Inventories supplies, alerts supervisor to needed supplies.
  • Attending courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials. Carries out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.
  • Conducting literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the PI. Attends courses, lectures and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information.
  • Contributing to the team within and between departments and organizations.

To qualify, you must have:

  • The knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree. Biology/Biochemistry preferred.
  • The analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Strongly motivated, highly organized and willing to put in extra hours when needed.
